What Is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a specialist field of Acupuncture aimed at improving the skins appearance naturally, sometimes also referred to as acupuncture facial rejuvenation. It is a gentle yet highly effective alternative to Cosmetic surgery, Botox/ collagen injections /dermal fillers, dermabrasion etc.

Although it is commonly called cosmetic acupuncture, the treatments are part of a specialty field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that use a combination of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Tui-na(acupuncture massage) and Chinese Dietary therapy, to achieve a youthful appearance. It differs from all other beauty techniques because treatments are unique to your constitution, based on your presenting TCM diagnosis. Your TCM diagnosis is determined by Pulse, tongue and our unique facial diagnosis. For more information about Cosmetic Chinese herbal medicine see our explanation under Herbs

Cosmetic Acupuncture has existed in China for centuries and was one of the key beauty secrets of the wealthy and powerful women of Ancient China. However, It was not until the 1970’s that it received formal recognition in modern China. It’s effectiveness was quickly recognised by celebrities who depend upon their appearance and has since spread rapidly.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a holistic treatment, which focuses on creating beauty from the inside out. Unlike other facial treatments, your entire health is improved during treatment leaving you feeling younger as well as looking younger.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is generally safer and more affordable than Botox, Collagen, Restylane injections, Cosmetic Surgery and involves absolutely no recovery time.

How Does Cosmetic Acupuncture Work?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The cosmetic acupuncture techniques have been used for thousands of years in China, demonstrating their effectiveness and safety . Even though these anti aging treatments are commonly referred to as ‘cosmetic acupuncture’, treatments are actually a combination of different Chinese techniques all with one purpose, making you look younger. Techniques include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Tui Na (acupressure massage), cupping, moxa, gua sha and the use of the luxurious Jade roller: Called TCM Cosmetology in China, authentic cosmetic acupuncturists use purely TCM diagnosis.

In Western Medicine terms, the treatments stimulate collagen and elastin production as well as increasing muscle firmness, improving lymphatic drainage, firming skin, closing pores and dramatically increasing micro-circulation to the face, improving skin colour. In Chinese Medicine it increases the flow of Qi and blood to the face as well as rebalancing the body’s internal organs and strengthening internal weaknesses. After a treatment skin generally looks firmer with improved muscle tone, tighter pores, and better facial colour. Cosmetic Acupuncture also has the added bonus of relieving stress, inducing a sense of relaxation also has noticeable health benefits.

By using TCM diagnosis techniques such as pulse/tongue diagnosis, facial diagnosis and questioning it is possible to identify and treat the major organ imbalances in the body that are causing ageing and skin imperfections. In Chinese facial diagnosis, different lines, blemishes, colours and sagging on the face reflect degeneration in particular organs.

Wrinkles and fine lines appear on the face where there is an imbalance in the body. By treating the imbalances of the body a patient’s physical appearance and health improves. By inserting very fine, single use Japanese needles into the face and body a pleasant and relaxing sensation of Qi or energy is achieved by the needles. The needles are left for 25 minutes in place and then are removed. The face is massaged and needled to treat the external manifestation of the internal imbalance. The body is needled to directly treat the facial imperfections and internal organ disharmony.

All treatments are unique in cosmetic acupuncture as no two people have the same problem just like human DNA differs from person to person.

Cosmetic Chinese Herbal medicine is also prescribed specifically for the individual’s Cosmetic TCM diagnosis. The Chinese herbal medicine works synergistically with the prescribed acupuncture, alleviating disease patterns. The herbal medicine is used in conjunction with cosmetic acupuncture as it facilitates rapid,  long lasting changes in the body. Results are seen much quicker when Chinese herbal medicine is combined with cosmetic acupuncture.

Who Uses Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Up until recently Cosmetic Acupuncture had remained one of the best kept secrets of Hollywood's rich and famous.

This has now changed with celebrities such as Madonna, Cher and Gweneth Paltrow coming forward as spokesmen for the effectiveness of Cosmetic Acupuncture. Specialist clinics now exist in California and London devoted exclusively to acupuncture facial rejuvenation.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is increasingly being sought out by individuals who value their appearance and are not willing to compromise their health to maintain it. It fits perfectly into the lives of those who ‘want to have their cake and eat it too’.

How Many Treatments Do You Need?

Even after a single  treatment skin looks firmer with improved muscle tone and complexion. Pores also appear smaller and there is an improvement in facial colour.

In fact research conducted by the Journal of Clinical acupuncture on 300 people found cosmetic acupuncture to be effective. 90% of patients saw results after one treatment.

However in severe cases, it may take 6-7 treatments for sustained results to appear.

12 treatments are recommended if you are just beginning to notice fine lines and minor issues  appearing- providing you have no major health problems. If you have already developed significant wrinkles, sagging or discolouration then it is recommended that you complete 15 treatments as there will be significantly more internal imbalances in the body and this requires more time and more comprehensive treatment.

To achieve long lasting results 15 treatments are recommended over a period of 2 and a half months. Every individual reacts differently to treatments. The results are semi permanent and may last for a couple of years with regular maintenance treatments every 4-6 weeks, some people may need to repeat a course of treatment every year. Cosmetic Treatments are offered as a package of 15 or 12 sessions and also singularly.

Intensive treatments are also offered to enhance your skin’s appearance for special events. These treatments run over a shorter period of time and are tailored around your time schedule. These treatments are very popular with performers and models but are equally useful prior to weddings and other social events.

What Is The Best Age To Commence Treatments?

Treatment can be started at any age, but the ideal age is in the late twenties/early thirties, to prevent as many signs of aging as possible. At this stage the treatment can focus on preventing the future loss of collagen many accept as inevitable. It is also best to get treatment as soon as you notice a change in your face. The longer you leave an imbalance, the longer it takes to bring the body back into harmony.

Cosmetic Acupuncture will help you age better as the benefits of this type of treatment are accumulative. As it works by optimizing your internal organs it  means that you will generally look better for your age than your peers. You may not notice this immediately but as the years progress it will become very obvious.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Cosmetic Acupuncture & Cosmetic Chinese Herbal medicine treatments are very gentle & safe. After treatments it is common for the skin to appear slightly flushed for a few hours. This is very normal and is due to the increased circulation of blood to the face.

Very occasionally minor and temporary bruising may appear at the site of needle insertion. This bruising is painless and will pass in a couple of days.

Most people feel very relaxed and peaceful after treatments and look forward to their next appointment.

Can You Explain Why “Your Face Is A Mirror Of Your Internal Health”?

Your face reflects the vitality and overall state of your health. By applying facial diagnosis, it is possible to determine many health imbalances simply by observing specific features of the face. For example the colour of your complexion, tone, discolorations, blemishes, or the location of fine lines and moles indicate specific difficulties with individual organs. Our faces are unique and reveal much about the state of our health, as well as personality traits. In China they use face reading not only to diagnose health problems but also to judge an individuals character.

Acupuncture meridians, or channels carry energy and blood around the whole body and run from the feet to the head (similar to the circulatory system, but more subtle). This circulation of energy is vital to the health and well-being of the overall body. The meridians connect internally with all the organs of the body. If there is a health problem with any one of the organs it directly effects the energy circulating in the meridians around the body and is clearly visible in the face.

Different areas of the face correlate to specific internal organs. So if you have a problem that repeatedly happens in a certain area of the face (discoloration, wrinkles etc), it is because of an internal health problem. Hence “your face is a mirror of your internal health”. When the internal imbalance is restored , not only does your facial appearance improve but so does your health.
